The Xi’an City Museum is next to the Xiaoyan Pagoda and contains relics from when Xi’an was the capital of the W Zhou, Qin, W Han, Sui & Tang dynasties. I first photographed it in spring, 2011, and returned to finish the job in October. Many bronzes and sancai photos are duplicated. I left the original photo, followed by the more recent one. But I added hundreds of additional photos as well. I also have 5 separate albums for the Shaanxi Provincial Museum, which has many similar artifacts. Photos by Gary L. Shaanxi Provincial Museum: Tang Gallery
This is the Tang Dynasty (and following) Gallery of the Shaanxi Provincial Museum in Xi’an, taken in fall, 2009, following major renovation. I have an earlier album of photos from this museum, and have posted further albums of the other galleries. These are all high-resolution photos taken with a 15+ megapixul Canon. Unfortunately, I ran out of time before I could write down the information on all the artifacts in this gallery, so after the buddha statues, I am doing a lot of guessing. Corrections are always welcomed. Photos by Gary L. Shaanxi Provincial Museum, Xi’an
Xi’an (or its immediate vicinity) has a very long history serving as the capital of many dynasties: Western Zhou, Qin, Western Han, Tang. With many tombs from many ages it is a rich source of ancient artifacts, many of which are displayed in this museum. Photos by Gary L. Xi’an: Terracotta Army of Qin Shihuang
The terracotta army protected the tomb of First Emperor of China Qin Shihuang (221-210 BC). Photos are from Pits 1, 2, & 3, and from the on-site museums. Some 8000 soldiers have been discovered and 1000 excavated to date, with only one found intact. Color faded within weeks of excavation, so work was halted for years until the problem of color stabilization was solved. Archaeologists have resumed work in Pit 1. The army was damaged in the wave of destruction at the end of the Qin Dynasty. The high-resolution photos were taken in 2009 & 2011; the others in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Photos by Gary L. Xi’an: Ancient Capital
Xi’an was the capital (or near the capital) of the W Zhou, Qin, W Han, Sui & Tang dynasties. The Dayan (Big Wild Goose) Buddhist Pagoda & the Great Mosque date from the Tang, while the city walls & bell & drum towers were built during the Ming. Nearby is the tomb of First Emperor Qin Shihuang, guarded by the army of terracotta warriors. I have separate albums for that and the provincial museum. I have also included photos of Tang-style costumes & dance performed for the tourist groups. Photos by Gary L.
